A BIRD'S EYE VIEW OF THE PENTHOUSE LOFT AND THE SURROUNDING NEIGHBORHOOD
Explore the thoughtful elements of design that contributed to this masterful renovation project
Volker Lofts, located on a tranquil dead-end street at 1628 14th Street in Denver’s historic Lower Downtown (LoDo) district, has an intriguing past that reflects the transformation of the area from an industrial hub to a vibrant residential and commercial space.
Originally constructed in 1907, the building was developed by William Volker & Company, a manufacturer specializing in Venetian blinds. At the time, LoDo was a bustling warehouse district, with structures designed for practical use rather than aesthetic appeal. The Volker Building was strategically positioned near Union Station, allowing easy freight transportation. Its second story entrance was the original main entry to the now demolished 14th Street viaduct; what is now the freight entrance served by a rail spur from Union Station.
Over the decades, the building housed various businesses, including Weicker Moving & Storage and the Wagner Furniture Company. However, as Denver evolved, so did the purpose of its historic buildings. By the 1980s and 1990s, LoDo began experiencing a renaissance, with old warehouses being repurposed into lofts, restaurants, and cultural spaces.
In 1992, the Volker Building was acquired and converted into residential lofts by Zeppelin Developments, a firm known for revitalizing historic properties. The transformation preserved key architectural elements, such as heavy timber beams, original brick walls, and hardwood floors, while adapting the space for modern urban living. With only 12 lofts, the building remains one of the more intimate residential spaces in LoDo, offering privacy and stunning views of the mountains, Cherry Creek, and the city skyline.
Today, Volker Lofts stands as a testament to Denver’s ability to blend history with contemporary urban living. The building’s location places residents within walking distance of restaurants, pubs, museums, and cultural venues, making it a sought-after address in the heart of the city.
